Restylane - Number One Selling Dermal Filler in USA
Findings from a survey of 369 physicians in the aesthetic medicine field in Canada, Italy, Germany, and France show that Restylane is the most-used dermal filler and is top of mind among the physicians surveyed. Since 1996, Restylane, a hyaluronic acid dermal filler, has been used in millions of treatments in more than 70 countries to correct the lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds). The survey was conducted to obtain insights from plastic surgeons and dermatologists on the use of facial filler products that are available in different countries (i.e., Canada, Italy, Germany, and France). It focused on the physicians' personal perspectives around and experiences with dermal fillers, and on the perception of beauty in their countries.
With so many cosmetic dermal fillers entering the U.S. marketplace, consumers and physicians are interested in knowing which products are used most frequently,'' said Jonah Shacknai, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Medicis. ``Understanding physician practices in other marketplaces, some of which have had experience with dermal fillers for upwards of five to ten years, provides an additional piece of information for consideration to help make an informed choice.''
A Closer Look at Leadership and International Usage
Physicians have a variety of injectable options at their disposal to correct nasolabial fold wrinkles, ranging from collagen derivates to hyaluronic acids. When it comes to selecting a dermal filler for correcting nasolabial fold wrinkles, the vast majority of physicians surveyed (80 percent) preferred hyaluronic acid to collagen (7 percent) and fat (6 percent). In terms of product preference among various hyaluronic acid products, almost three times as many physicians surveyed selected Restylane (62 percent) versus the next option, Juvederm (22 percent).
Physicians surveyed who use Restylane in their practice reported that on average 57 percent of procedures they perform for nasolabial fold wrinkle correction involve this brand. More than one-third (34 percent) of these physicians use Restylane almost exclusively, utilizing the brand in almost all nasolabial wrinkle fold correction procedures (90 to 100 percent).
In my practice, I have been using hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers since 2003, when they first became available,'' stated Patricia Wexler, MD, a renowned dermatologist based in New York City. ``I consider Restylane to be the leading choice for my practice.''
Is there science in beauty? The survey revealed the factors physicians feel contribute most to making a person beautiful. There were several factors considered, including youthfulness, symmetry of features, and overall beauty. Thirty-nine percent of physicians surveyed feel that ``younger appearance'' is the main factor that makes a person beautiful, however there were some standouts when broken down by country:
* Younger appearance is the highest in France with 61 percent of
physicians surveyed selecting that response
* Italy found symmetry of features to be more important than the
other contributing factors with 44 percent making that selection
* Originality of appearance is most important to the German
physicians, with 34 percent of the vote
What did not vary among countries, or among physicians, is agreement (98 percent) with the statement that ``after receiving a cosmetic procedure, patients feel more confident regarding their appearance.''
Survey Methodology
The multinational survey was conducted by SRBI via 10- to 12-minute phone conversations reaching 369 dermatologists and plastic surgeons with a minimum of two years practicing medicine and regular use of facial fillers in their practices in Canada, Italy, Germany, and France. Participants were recruited through a sample of physicians compiled using pharmaceutical company sales data and professional registries. Participant use of specific brands of facial fillers was not part of the recruitment criteria.

Appear Younger Without A Trip To The Doctors Office
While everyone knows that wearing sunscreen, getting the right amount of sleep and not smoking will prevent the skin from aging prematurely, what can be done about existing damage? Especially for those people who want to avoid a trip to the doctor's office?
For leathery or dull skin, a doctor would advise a chemical peel. However a resurfacing serum may work almost as well. The resurfacing chemical is a mild peel that you can do in the privacy of your own home. Check the label for the ingredient glucosamine arginine for the best results. Editor at Self Magazine, Leah Wyar says, It really dissolves the dull layers of skin so you have a more glowing complexion. Keep in mind that the serum shouldn't be used more than two or three times a week.
Fine lines and wrinkles are often treated in the doctors' offices with Botox, however peptide treatments at home can provide similar results. The chemicals send messages to your nerves telling them to relax the muscles. While it is available in a cream, the serum in the gel patch is more effective. Check for peptides on the label.
For deeper wrinkles, look for a product with hyaluronic acid on the label. It gets under your skin and sucks up moisture into your upper layers of skin to temporarily plump and fill your wrinkles.
Age spots and freckles would be treated by retinoid by your doctor. Over time the retinoid treatment would smooth out your skin and skin tone. Wyar announces that there are antioxidant treatment that can do the same thing, repair damaged skin.
Wyar speaks of the Coffeeberry which forms a shield in your skin and deactivates those free radicals that are floating around your skin and causing damage.
Blue ginger and bearberry are similar to the Coffeeberry product. These products should be applied twice daily along with a sunscreen to help the skin absorb the antioxidant better.

New Laser Design Eliminates Hyper-Pigmentation In Pregnant Women And Seniors

standing as a top aesthetic treatment.
However, if you are performing microdermabrasion on yourself, there are a few things you should know. The following four-step schedule will help you become
your own skin expert.
1. Ask yourself what you expect from microdermabrasion. Without knowing what you really want from a product, you can't truly determine its effectiveness. Microdermabrasion is most commonly used to reduce wrinkles, remove or reduce scars, lighten skin tone, retexturize damaged skin, and reduce
the appearance of freckles and age spots.
2. Determine your skin type to help decide how often you should use microdermabrasion. Depending on whether your skin is oily, dry, rough, leathery or sensitive will be a determining factor for how often your should treat your skin.
3. Choose your microdermabrasion product to suit your skin type and your skin goals. A deep skin procedure will not be your best choice if your skin is sensitive and you only want to reduce the appearance of freckles as it may cause irritation. On the other hand, if you have leathery skin and deep wrinkles, you wouldn't want a product that barely affects the skin.

Stem Cells Offer Hope For The Future Of Plastic Surgery
Songtao Shi along with other researchers at the University of Southern California have been conducting experiments utilizing stem cells to grow bone and skin. Shi's newest results could literally change the way cosmetic surgery is performed throughout the world.
Shi conducts research in the USC's Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology. Working together with scientists at dental schools in China and Korea, Shi has discovered that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have the ability to grow bone and tissue as demonstrated in swine and mouse subjects.
Although the studies are still in their early stages, the research published in the Stem Cells' April issue implies that MSCs could someday be the first choice of plastic surgeons in just about every procedure performed.
It's very exciting, Shi commented, It is fundamentally different from current techniques. At this point it is just a concept, but in the future it may change the way we do plastic surgery.
The studies include results from two separate experiments. First Shi and colleagues drew MSC from human bone marrow and inserted them into the fore section of a skull. Two months later, growth was apparent. Further examination of the new tissue proved it to be not only healthy but also completely part of the existing bone.
More amazing was the evidence that the new bone revealed signs of homeostasis, a method the bone uses to produce red and white blood cells.
Shi said, This is very important. This is not an implant. This is an extension of the body. These cells have the ability to work with and organize existing cells and tissue.

In the future, Shi plans to move forward with his preliminary findings by studying various systems of delivery. The MSCs success can change through the use of different scaffolding materials. He is also planning to examine the possibility of autologous stem cells, which are produced by the subject own tissue, to increase success rates.
Shi says, There are many potential applications for these techniques. There is still so much that we don't understand fully. It is clear that we need more studies to explore new therapies and improve clinical consequences.
Shi conducts research in the USC's Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology. Working together with scientists at dental schools in China and Korea, Shi has discovered that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have the ability to grow bone and tissue as demonstrated in swine and mouse subjects.
Although the studies are still in their early stages, the research published in the Stem Cells' April issue implies that MSCs could someday be the first choice of plastic surgeons in just about every procedure performed.
It's very exciting, Shi commented, It is fundamentally different from current techniques. At this point it is just a concept, but in the future it may change the way we do plastic surgery.
The studies include results from two separate experiments. First Shi and colleagues drew MSC from human bone marrow and inserted them into the fore section of a skull. Two months later, growth was apparent. Further examination of the new tissue proved it to be not only healthy but also completely part of the existing bone.
More amazing was the evidence that the new bone revealed signs of homeostasis, a method the bone uses to produce red and white blood cells.
Shi said, This is very important. This is not an implant. This is an extension of the body. These cells have the ability to work with and organize existing cells and tissue.

Fish Parts Found To Prevent Wrinkles
The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) has been studying the effects of fish waste on skin cells. The results may prove that the answer to preventing wrinkles lies in the most revolting parts of the fish.
The parts most often used are the skin and liver, and occasionally the eyes or gills.
Reserachers at the NIWA have spent the last five years testing these bits of fish waste on human skin cells grown in test tubes. Over 150 various species of fish were testing. The results proved most interesting, They don't' act like ordinary UV protectants for example, which primarily put a layer over the top of your skin, but seem to actually get into the cells and actually so a protection from within the cell, says Dr. Vicki Webb of the NIWA.
While fish waste won't stop people from aging, it does seem to give skin cells a longer life expectancy. Omega 3 oil, the oil found in fish. Has been included in many skin products before but this will be the first time actual fish parts will be used. Expect products to begin appearing on shelves, in France, later this year.
Some wonder if consumers will really be wiling to purchase beauty products made of fish parts. Gary Nicholson, of the Kirkcaldie Stains store, believes they will. It's probably one of those products that people will come and try and if they find it works for them they will continue to purchase it.
However NIWA cautions people that not all of the fish waste products are effective for wrinkle prevention. No don't' try this at home, wait until the product comes out.

Kricorian Becomes Artes Chief Medical Officer

Condoleeza Rice- Her Style And Her Looks
Condoleeza Rice has pushed boundaries. She has shown that sex doesn’t matter when it comes to power. She has shown she can take on any man when it comes to politics and beat them at their own game and love her or hate her you have to admire her. But one issue that has never really been discussed is Condoleeza’s looks. There’s no doubt she’s an intelligent woman but is she dealing with aging as well as she is dealing with authority?
Condoleeza’s political career has been prolific. She became Secretary of State on January 26, 2005 after four years as the National Security Advisor. But has considering the well being of the country prevented her from taking any interest in her looks? And is holding back the aging process very much low on her priorities?
Fashion journalist Louise Gerrard says “Condoleeza is an amazing woman. She has one of the most important jobs in the world. Saying that she is a woman and of course looks are somewhat important to her. However, perhaps because she has more important things to think about, Condoleeza doesn’t dress as well she could.â€
